Assalamu alaikum Mufti Sahib,
I hope that everything is going well for you and your family.
I wanted to ask a question which has been bothering me for a while and is related to my job and career. As a physician searching for jobs in the U.S., I often come across hospitals and medical organizations which are affiliated with various Christian groups or churches. Examples from the Chicago area (where I live) include St. Alexius, St. Joseph’s, Resurrection Hospital, and Advocate Lutheran. Many of these organizations use a cross as their logo/symbol, and have overt religious connotations to their mission statements and mottos, such as “healing in the spirit of Jesus Christ”.
My question is that, as Muslims, where do we draw the line? I understand that we are absolutely not allowed to wear any item with a Christian cross. But would it still be allowed to be employed and work for such organizations that have direct religious affiliations and motivations? Many such places have their logo on every item in their clinic offices, from clothing to papers, prescriptions pads, notes and letters, not to mention over the front entrances of their clinics.
Jazak Allahu khair,
If the employee does not wear any uniform with cross logo nor does he help in missionary activities then he is permitted to work for such organizations. But this type of jobs would not be recommended especially when alternative is available. Since these organizations aim at promoting Christianity which leads people to ascribing partner with Allaaah while Muslims are prohibited to help one another in evil and wrong. The Glorious Qur’aan says, “Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa; but do not help one another in sin and transgression.” (Suratul Maidah5:2)
Therefore, it is advisable that if someone is working for such organization should carry on his work and ask Allaah for the better alternative. As soon as he is blessed with the alternative should leave that job.
