Ruling on Smoking

asalaamu alikum

i have a question pertaining to smoking(regular cigarettes, not major drugs like weed etc.)

if someone smokes regular cigarettes(that are very common in palestine, Bangladesh, and other areas) will their prayers not be accepted for 40 days?

i ask because most people who smoke do not at all get intoxicated as alcohol or other drugs can do. but sometimes someone can get a buzz.

i know it is haram but is it as bad of a sin as alcohol where your prayers wont be accepted?

Different rulings on smoking cigarette and tobacco could be found in the Fatawaa books of contemporary scholars.

A few prominent scholars from Indian sub-continent are of the opinion that cigarette and tobacco are permissible in themselves on the basis of general principle that all things are originally permissible until proven otherwise. They added that smoking would be disliked if one does not care of cleansing his mouth after smoking and it produces repulsive odour.

Others are of the view that the harm caused by smoking is not so great as to make it haraam. So it is reprehensible, less than haraam as it produces bad odour and causes little harm to the health.

Some others say that it is recommendable if it produces greater balance and ability to work.

Most of the scholars from the Arab world hold it to be haraam on the basis of the fact that it causes serious harm and weakness and proves to be dangerous for the life of a smoker. They present in favour of their ruling the verse of the Glorious Qur’aan in which Allaah سبحانه وتعالى prohibited man to make his own hands contribute to his destruction, and the authentic saying of the Nabee ﷺ in which he prohibited all things that cause intoxication and languor.

Therefore, according to the Arab Ulamaa cigarette and tobacco are as Haraam as alcohol and the prayer of the consumer will not be accepted for forty days as mentioned in the Hadith. But as for the majority of the Ulamaa from Indian sub-continent are of the opinion that cigarette and tobacco are not as Haraam as alcohol. These substances are reprehensible because of producing bad odour and causing harm sometimes to the health.

However, it is advisable to avoid smoking as it involves wastage of money and serious health hazards.
