Asalaamu alaikum mufti,
i have two questions that were brought up today by a non muslim i am trying to give dawah to, and i told him i would get back to him on it. though i am a salafi(wahhabi) and you are a deobandi, i think your answers will be sufficient for these questions insha allah.
1. why did allah(swt) destroy entire cities? there are cities now that are just as sinful as before but they are not destroyed now days. please explain.
2. as i read about the destruction, i see that cities were destroyed because they were unbelievers. but why was sodom destroyed because they were gay? like, were they considered unbelievers because they were gay, or were they gay and also unbelievers? would allah(swt) ever destroy a city of muslims even if they sin?
1. Allaah سبحانه وتعالى destroyed the entire cities because they were disbelievers, rejecters and opposers to their messengers. There is no shadow of doubt that Allaah سبحانه وتعالىcan destroy the cities as He سبحانه وتعالى did. Allaah سبحانه وتعالى says, “He has the power to send torment on you from above or from under your feet…” (Suratulan’aam 6: 65) But sometimes Allaah سبحانه وتعالى gives people chance to realize and when they cross the limitation, He سبحانه وتعالى takes them to task by earthquake, storm, cyclone, Tsunami and likes.
2. Those who had been destroyed amongst the people of Lut were disbelievers and rejecters and opposer to Lut عليه السلام and his teachings. Allaah says, “And (remember) Lut, when he said to his people: “You commit immoral sins which none has preceded you in (committing) it in all creatures. Verily, you practice sodomy with men, rob the wayfarer and practice in your meetings all that are not befitting. But his people gave no answer except that they said: “Bring Allah’s torment upon us if you are one of the truthful. He said: “My Lord! Give me victory over the people who are corrupt.” (Suratulankaboot 29: 28-30)
Allaah سبحانه وتعالى can destroy Muslim cities as well but He سبحانه وتعالى does not break His promise. He سبحانه وتعالى granted the Du’aa of the beloved Nabee ﷺwhen he asked for not destroying this Ummah with what He سبحانه وتعالى destroyed the previous nations. Imam Ahmad recorded a long Hadith where it is mentioned the Nabee of Allaah ﷺ asked Allaah for three things but he was granted two things. One of these two is not to destroy this Ummah with what He destroyed the nations before.
