The Sufis strong attachment to the Qur’an and Sunnah

Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem

Alhamdulilah Allahumma sali ala sayidna muhammad wa ala ali sayidna muhammad

Taken from Sunnah way of the Sufis by Imam al-Muhasibi rahimahullah researched and explained by Shaykh Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah rahimahullah translated by Mahomed Mahomedy (Zam Zam publishers)

The Sufi’s strong attachment to the Qur’an and Sunnah

Junayd rahimahullah says: “This way of ours is confined to principles: The Qur’an and the Sunnah. The person who does not safeguard the Qur’an, yet he records hadith and learns jurisprudence will not be followed.” (Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullah, Ighathah al-Lahfan, vol.1,p.125)

Shaykh Sha’rani rahimahullah says: “Every path which Rasulullah (salalahu alayhi wa salam) did not tread on is the path of darkness. Anyone who follows such a path cannot be sure of being safe and not falling into destruction.”(Shaykh Sha’rani rahimahullah, Kashf al-Ghummah, vol.1,p.10)

He said: “Adapt to the Shari’ah irrespective of how it is. Do not bother about your discoveries because they can be incorrect. You should study books of jurisprudence in abundance. this is the opposite of the norm of the sufis for whom a gleam of the light of the path became visible to them and so they stopped the study of jurisprudence. They said: ‘This [study of jurisprudence] is a barrier.’ This is ignorance on their part.” (Ibn al-Imad al-Hambali rahimahullah, Shadharat adh-Dhahab, vol/8 p.374 under the biography of Shaykh Sha’rani rahimahullah)

Imam al-Ghazzali rahimahullah says: “al-Junayd rahimahullah said that one day his shaykh, as-Sariyy rahimahullah said to him: ‘When you get up and leave my company, in whose company do you sit?’ I replied: ‘I sit in the company of al-Muhasibi.’ He said: ‘He is a wonderful person. Benefit from his knowledge and his character. And remain aloof from his theology which he refutes and refutation of those who are engrossed in scholastic theology.’ Then when I turned away to leave, I heard him saying: ‘May Allah (Subhannahu wa ta ala) make you a person who is attached to Hadith and a Sufi. May He not make you a Sufi who is attached to Hadith.” Al-Ghazzali rahimahullah says: “What he means by this is that the person who acquires hadith- that is knowledge- and then becomes a Sufi will be successful. As for the one who becomes a Sufi before acquiring knowledge will be putting himself into danger.” (Al-Ghazzali rahimahullah, al-Ihya vol.1, pp.37-38)
