as salaamu alaykum,

Wa alaykumus salaam
Bay’ah is a sunnah that is established from Rasulullaah salallaahualayhi wa sallam. The bay’ah is of various types that Rasulullaah salallaahu alayhi wa sallam had taken from the sahaabah. ridhwaanullaahi alayhim  viz. the bay’ah of imaan, the bay’ah of jihaad and the bay’ah of toubah. An example of such bay’ah is to be found in the books of ahaadeeth. Bukhari and Muslim narrate that Ubada ibn as-Samit Radhiyallahu anhu said, “The Prophet (s) said, ‘Give me your pledge and oath not to associate anything with Allah, not to steal, not to commit adultery, not to kill your children, not to backbite, not to fall into sin; and who keeps his promise, then his reward is from Allah, Almighty and Exalted.’ And then we gave our pledge to the Prophet (s) and our oath.”

The Prophet (s) used to give initiation (bay’ah) not only for jihad but also for the purpose of self reformatin. Auf bin maalik alashja’ee radhiyallaahu anhu narrates ” We were with rasulullaah salallaahu alayhi wa sallam , about seven, eight or nine of us, when rasulullaah said “will you not make bay’ah to the messenger of ALLAH?” We streched out our hands and asked ” on what should we make bay’ah ya rasulallaah ” He salallaahu alayhi wa sallam replied ” that you worship ALLAH and you associate no partners to him and that you establish the five daily prayers and promise to listen and obey.”
From these ahaadeeth it is established that the bay’ah the mashaaikh take is established from the sunnah and therefore it should be done in that manner. It is not a ritual but rather a means of having our self reformation fulfilled.
